Home » Audience

The person/group that you are writing to is just as important as what you are writing. Without the correct audience (especially in technical writing), everything you wrote will have zero effect because the person reading your work won’t make any use of it. Audience was a major focus for this class and made up a great portion of our research prior to writing any piece. Before writing we had to understand the scope of our audience and how that would affect our writing. A big part of this meant knowing the relationship between audience purpose and content, when one was changed the other two would have to change or be slightly adjusted as well. To ensure we understood our audience correctly we did “audience analysis sheets” (figure 12) where we did research on the best person to write to based on their occupation or background, and their likely style of reading our document.
