Genre and purpose go hand in had. Based on the purpose behind you’re writing, certain genres help you achieve that purpose better than others. While many genres exist in technical writing they all exist to help writers get their point across more effectively. In this class we focused on four genres:

Memo, Technical Description, Lab Report and Engineering Proposal (figure 11) were the four main genres we looked at in this course. All genres serve different purposes and have varying audiences. Despite all falling under the same main category of technical writing, all of these approach each rhetorical devices very differently especially when it comes to purpose and stance.
